Norden & Norderney

Norden. Nothing would have driven me to Norden. That community on the shore of the North Sea, which offered its visitors the seaside resort Norddeich and the associated dog beach Norddeich. If it wasn’t for my mother. For years, my mother dreamed of buying a house close to the North Read more…

Dogwalking at Rheinaue wetlands

It was only by chance, that we spent an afternoon at the Rheinauen in Bonn, after having had an appointment in the city before. It was a warm, late summerday and we were drawn to the water. We drove a bit haphazardly towards the Rhine, looked for a parking spot Read more…

A walk at sunset

Sunset. Translucent atmospheres. It‘s 2018 on the heights of Solingen.   It is already October and Tia and Sandy have been with us for three months. They know all the surroundings of Solingen. That city in which I grew up and which I never learned to love. Accordingly, I long Read more…

A day in the fields

Fields. Endless expanses. It‘s the year 2018 in Solingen, western Germany.   We stroll across finite fields, which gently curve over the edges of Bergisches Land. It smells like earth and hay, in a way, that no trampled path will ever smell like. The soft ground flatters the joints. The Read more…

A day in the forest

The forest. Infinite depths. It’s the year 2018 in Leysiefen.   The small community of the town of Leichlingen in western Germany, has been one of my favorite walking areas since I was little. Once the forest lay fairy tale like between the river Wupper, some farmland and mountain foothills, Read more…

A day at the dog’s meadow

The dog’s meadow. Astonishing fun. It’s the year 2018 in the Hildener Heide in western Germany.   The title “dog’s meadow” is not quite right. It implies a fenced area, which is specially designed for dogs. This actually once existed on the left side of the heath. However, it was Read more…

The story of Tia and Sandy – From streetdogs to globetrotters

We don’t know anything about Tia’s first five months of life, and we don’t know how old Sandy is, nor do we know one shred of her past. These are the things we don’t know. The times of knowing began during a walk in Cyprus, March 5th 2017.   We Read more…

Cyprus – Where everything started

Everything started in Cyprus. Everything started with housesitting. Via Trustedhousesitters, we discovered a request from an Englishwoman living in Cyprus, who was looking for housesitters for her 11 cats and 6 dogs, during her four-week absence. At that time, we were traveling as petless digital nomads, drifting where the wind Read more…

We’re currently living in Madron. And as we have We’re currently living in Madron. And as we have dogs, it’s incredibly important to us, to have a decent walk right at the house. And, without realizing it beforehand, we found ourselves just a few minutes from the house in the forest of the Holy Well of Madron. Madron Well is famed for its magical healing powers. Visitors still tie cloths to surrounding branches, continuing a centuries-old tradition. Historically, the sick would bathe in the well during Beltane, walk around it three times, and leave cloth from the afflicted area, believing that as it decayed, their illness would heal. High radiation levels are thought to boost its mystical properties. Local maidens also performed rituals here to predict marriage timing. Nearby, the ruins of a 12th-century chapel, possibly linked to Pagan worship. But the Well is not that easy to find. We spent hours making our way through the undergrowth, had to pull our shoes out of the boggy ground, and bumped our heads on live branches, that tried to chase us away. In the end, Tia found the sacred waters and went straight for a boggy dip, followed by my hysterical laughter, which will surely initiate my healing. Yeah!
